Wenger: Arsenal star to make long-awaited injury comeback next week

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Danny Welbeck is in-line to make his long-awaited first team comeback against Hull City next weekend.

Welbeck suffered what was initially thought to be a minor knee injury in April of last year but was ruled out for several months after being forced to undergo surgery in September.

The attacker returned to full training earlier this month and he returned to competitive action after playing 60 minutes for the under-21’s against Brighton & Hove Albion last Friday.

Wenger says the 25-year-old is back to ‘full power’ in training and while Sunday’s Premier League clash with Leicester City will come too soon, Welbeck is set to make his first team comeback in our FA Cup fifth round tie with Hull next weekend.

Arsene confirmed the news to Arsenal.com in his team news update ahead of the Leicester game, saying:

It is a similar squad available to last week, we are still early in the week but we should have everyone available. Of course Rosicky [is out], and Wilshere is not ready. But everyone else should be available

He is doing well, it is a bit early for him maybe but he is now back to full power in training. It is a big possibility [he could be involved against Hull next week]. We gave him one or two days recovery after the under-21 game, but now he is back in full training. He has worked very hard and he is fit.

It will be a huge boost to have Welbeck back in the squad as I think we’ve sorely missed him this season and he’ll give Wenger another viable alternative to Olivier Giroud through the middle during the run-in.

It’s going to take him a few weeks to get his match sharpness back but the Hull game is the ideal opportunity to give him first team minutes.
