Wenger reveals Arsenal star is close to making injury comeback

Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal.com that Danny Welbeck is ‘not far’ from making his long-awaited comeback from injury and is due to play for the under-21 side soon.

Welbeck hasn’t been seen since picking up what was initially thought to be a minor knee injury during our Premier League clash with Chelsea way back in late April 2015.

The problem turned out to be far more serious than anyone could have anticipated and Danny was eventually forced to undergo surgery in September after failing to overcome the injury during the summer months.

However, Welbeck is finally on the comeback trail as he returned to full training earlier this week and Wenger has now confirmed that the 25-year-old will play for the under-21’s in order to help build-up his match fitness.

This weekend’s trip to Stoke will come too soon for Welbeck so it looks like he could turn out for the under-21’s when Brighton come to North London next weekend.

Here is what Wenger told the clubs website today:

Danny Welbeck is not completely ready but he is not far. He needs a game or two because he’s been out since last April. The Stoke [under-21] game is too soon because he only had one session with the team, and that is too short.

As long as Welbeck doesn’t suffer any setbacks in training and comes through the Brighton game next weekend, then there is no reason why he shouldn’t be inline to make his first team comeback against Leicester City on February 14th.

It will be a big boost to have Danny available again as I think we’ve sorely missed him over the past eight months and he’ll give the boss another vital alternative to Giroud during the second half of the season.
