What Arsenal need to qualify from Champions League Group F

Last night’s 5-1 thrashing at Bayern Munich has left us sitting bottom of Group F on just three points from our first four matches. Here, I’ll take a look at exactly what we need in order to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

You can see how the group currently looks at the bottom of the post. It doesn’t look pretty. However, we actually still have a reasonable chance of qualifying.

Firstly, we need to beat Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates in three weeks time. That much is obvious. Anything other than victory and we’re out.

Secondly, we need a favour from Bayern Munich and hope they beat Olympiakos at the Allianz Arena. The fact they are level on points at the top of the table works in our favour as Bayern will want to secure qualification as group winners. But again, if Olympiakos get a positive result, we’re out.

But let’s stay positive and assume Arsenal and Bayern record home wins….

Then comes the tricky part. We MUST beat Olympiakos by two clear goals in Greece on the final matchday. A 1-0 or 2-1 win won’t be enough due to our head-to-head record after they beat us 3-2 at the Emirates.

So it’s that simple. Hope Bayern beat Olympiakos, beat Zagreb and win by two clear goals in Greece and we’ll take second. Easy…..
