Arsenal Linked With Audacious €25m Move For Dream Striker – Reports
The rumour mill has gone into overdrive again this weekend with reports suggesting that Arsenal are set to make an audacious move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
The French international is a name that’s long been linked with a move to Arsenal as Arsene Wenger is known to be a huge fan of the player with his interest in the striker going all the way back to when he was at Lyon.
Spanish outlet AS claim that the boss is now eyeing a move for Benzema this summer as the player’s future at the Bernabeu is ‘up in the air’ following the arrival of Rafa Benitez.
The former Liverpool boss is apparently planning to play Cristiano Ronaldo through the middle in a 4-2-3-1 formation next season which would leave Benzema out in the cold, and the paper suggests that Wenger is hoping to lure the 27-year-old to England.
These claims come amid reports that we’re set to make a cheeky €25m (£17.8m) offer for the French hitman which is incredibly low in today’s market for a player of his quality.
After doing a little digging, news of the supposed bid comes from the Daily Star who cite the Metro as their source who in turn cite Spanish outlet Fichajes.net – who are less than reliable – so I’m taking this news with a huge grain of salt.
Wenger wouldn’t be stupid enough to think that Madrid would sell one of the best strikers in the world who has three years left on his deal for just €25m – which is less than they paid Lyon in 2009.
I have no doubt the boss would jump at the chance to sign Benzema if given the opportunity as he’d be the perfect addition to spearhead our attack, but there’s virtually no chance a €25m will be enough to land him.
So my take on things is that we’re probably watching Benzema’s situation with interest and will move if he becomes available, but I’m not buying for one minute that we’re making a paltry €25m offer anytime soon.
