Sky Sports: Arsenal frontrunners to sign Alex Scott

Arsenal are among the frontrunners to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott this summer, according to Sky Sports.

Individual praise from Pep Guardiola is rare, yet the former Manchester City boss couldn’t hide his admiration for Scott, branding him an ‘unbelievable player’ after the then-19-year-old impressed in midfield during Bristol City’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against City on February 28, 2023.

Fast forward three years and the Guernsey-born midfielder has more than justified that assessment, with several Premier League heavyweights now circling amid mounting transfer speculation.

Mikel Arteta might have also seen up close why the 22-year-old is one of the most coveted midfielders in the ongoing transfer window after his commanding display against his side during Bournemouth’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in April. He won the man of the match in that game and was hailed as ‘amazing’ by the current Cherries boss Andoni Iraola.

Now, as per Sky Sports, Scott has rejected several contract proposals from Bournemouth, who have been keen to extend his deal amid interest from several clubs, including Arsenal.

‘Amazing’ midfielder

Still, the report adds that the Premier League champions are among the frontrunners to sign the exciting midfield stalwart this summer.

However, the North London giants are not alone in the race, with Sky Sports adding that Chelsea and Manchester United are also on the front line in the race for Scott.

Despite the Englishman’s refusal to extend his contract, Bournemouth are not open to selling him this summer, and they expect him to be part of their squad next season irrespective of his contractual stance, according to the report.

Although Arsenal already possess several midfield options, strengthening the centre of the pitch remains a priority, particularly with Christian Nørgaard expected to depart.

Though he’s operated as a third-choice option, the Dane has consistently delivered whenever asked to step in, especially during Arsenal’s injury-hit festive fixtures, when he was even utilised at centre-back.

That said, with his 33rd birthday arriving in March, clear signs of inconsistency have been visible, like in the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Southampton last season.

As such, a move for a younger, dynamic and reliable midfielder like Scott would be an ideal option to replace the former Brentford captain.

Having previously rebuffed several offers from interested clubs, Arsenal will need to submit a concrete offer significantly above his £42m Transfermarkt valuation to test the waters.
