Arsenal plot swoop to sign Mainz star Kaishu Sano
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano, as per a recent German report.
Despite winning the Premier League title last term, the Gunners are seemingly planning to reinforce the engine room this summer. They currently have Christian Nørgaard, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino and Martín Zubimendi as options for the deeper midfield positions.
However, Norgaard struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last term. On the other hand, Zubimendi enjoyed a promising start in the Premier League after joining Real Sociedad.
But, he failed to continue the momentum and faded away during the climax stage of the last campaign. Merino, meanwhile, struggled with fitness problems.
A plethora of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, with Bruno Guimaraes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Alex Scott being among them.
However, as per a recent German report (via Caught Offside), Arsenal have also expressed their interest in Sano after being impressed by his performances for Japan in the World Cup.
But the North London club will have to overcome fierce competition to finalise the operation as Manchester United and Liverpool are also in this race.
Sano to Arsenal
The Merseyside club have even held talks with the player’s representatives to agree on personal terms and are preparing to submit a formal proposal to Mainz.
With the 25-year-old’s existing deal set to run until 2028, the German side are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in and have slapped a £52m price tag on his head.
Sano is comfortable in the defensive midfield and box-to-box roles. He enjoyed a promising World Cup campaign with Japan, making two goal contributions in three appearances.
He is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Sano is quick, technically sound, has an eye for scoring goals from distance, and is efficient in defensive contributions. Therefore, the Asian might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal to add depth should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium before the start of next season.
