Arsenal have reportedly launched a proposal to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes, as per transfer expert David Ornstein.

Despite already having Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Christian Norgaard, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, the Gunners are keen on purchasing a new midfielder.

The reason behind their desire is that Norgaard struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last term, while Merino had fitness problems.

On the other hand, Zubimendi displayed inconsistent performances during his debut campaign in the Premier League, and Lewis-Skelly is still very young and needs time to develop.

A plethora of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, with Sandro Tonali, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Alex Scott being among them.

However, it has recently been reported that the North London club are also interested in Guimaraes, having been impressed by his impact for Newcastle in recent years. So, they have held talks with his representatives over a potential swoop this summer.

Now, on The Athletic, Ornstein has stated that Arsenal have launched a verbal proposal through intermediaries worth below £60m to purchase the Brazilian international.

However, the Magpies have no intention of parting ways with their captain in this window, with his existing deal set to run until 2028. So, they have rejected Arsenal’s proposal. The journalist hasn’t mentioned whether Arsenal are planning to return with an improved bid or not.

The midfielder has been out on international duty with Brazil, helping his country reach the World Cup knockout stage, and they are set to face Japan.

Guimaraes is comfortable playing in the box-to-box and deep-lying playmaker positions. The 28-year-old is currently at the prime stage of his career and has proven his worth in the Premier League in recent years.

The South American helped Newcastle overcome their long-standing trophy drought last year and possesses leadership qualities.

So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a push to lure him away from St James’ Park this summer.
