Arsenal could hijack Tottenham’s pursuit of Tonali

Former striker turned pundit Jay Bothroyd claims that Arsenal can hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s deal to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali.

Since moving to St James’ Park from AC Milan, the 26-year-old has showcased his qualities in the Premier League in recent years, helping his side win the Carabao Cup last year.

However, it has been suggested that the Italian is keen on leaving to take the next step in his career, while Tottenham are pushing hard to purchase him. They have already seen their opening £75m proposal rejected by the Magpies and are hoping to finalise the operation for a fee of around £85m.

Apart from the North London club, Manchester City and Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Tonali. Now, on Sky Sports (via Metro), Bothroyd has stated that if Arsenal formalise their interest in Tonali, they are likely to win this race like they hijacked Spurs’ deal for Eberechi Eze last summer.

Tonali is ‘one of the best’ midfielders in the world and is on the same level as Declan Rice. The Newcastle star possesses everything a top-class midfielder needs and will make Arsenal stronger should they buy him.

Bothroyd said:

“I did say the other day, if Arsenal come in, exactly the same situation that happened with Eze is going to happen again with Tonali. I think Tonali is one of the best midfielders in the world. He’s got everything you would want in your midfielder.

“He’s just 26 years old as well. He would definitely go straight into Arsenal’s starting lineup, and obviously make it better. So I can understand why Arsenal want him to go in there. They need to retain the title.”

Tonali to Arsenal

Despite winning the Premier League title last term, Arsenal are said to be planning to refresh the squad by spending big money this summer. Mikel Arteta is keen on upgrading the centre-forward and left flank; moreover, purchasing a new midfielder is also on his agenda.

Tonali is comfortable playing in the box-to-box and deep-lying playmaker position. He is quick, strong, technically sound, has an eye for long-range passing, and can play threading passes between the lines.

Moreover, he is efficient in taking set-pieces and also works hard without possession. He is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.

Therefore, Tonali would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Gunners eventually formalise their interest in signing the former AC Milan star.
