Arsenal plot surprise swoop to sign Mason Greenwood
Arsenal are reportedly planning to launch a surprise swoop to sign Olympique de Marseille star Mason Greenwood, as per French outlet L’Equipe.
After progressing through Manchester United’s youth system, the Englishman established himself as an undisputed first-team starter and was even regarded as one of the best young players in the Premier League.
However, the Red Devils were forced to part ways with him due to off-field issues. He initially joined Getafe on loan in 2023 before signing for the French giants permanently the following year.
Greenwood has showcased his goal-scoring prowess at Stade Velodrome over the last couple of years. In his debut campaign, he made 27 goal contributions across all competitions.
The forward took his game to another level last term, scoring 26 goals and registering 11 assists in 45 appearances in all tournaments.
Now, L’Equipe state that after being impressed by Greenwood’s recent promising performances, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him.
Marseille have found themselves in financial difficulties, having failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League. So, they are prepared to raise funds by selling Greenwood and have slapped a £69m price tag on his head, with Man Utd holding a 40% sell-on clause.
Greenwood to Arsenal
However, the report state that Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in him. Roberto De Zerbi brought Greenwood to Marseille and is seemingly willing to reunite with his former colleague at North London. But Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Lilywhites aren’t working on a deal to purchase the 24-year-old.
With Gabriel Jesus’s existing deal set to run until next summer, he has been linked with a move away. On the other hand, Viktor Gyokeres displayed inconsistent performances last term. So, Arsenal are said to be planning to buy a new striker.
Greenwood is efficient in the right flank and centre-forward positions. He is a left-footed player but is also comfortable with the right. He is a top-class player and hasn’t reached his prime yet.
Moreover, Greenwood previously showcased his qualities in the Premier League. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, considering the off-field reason Man Utd were forced to sell him, it is highly unlikely that Arsenal will create controversy by purchasing him this summer.
