Arsenal plot swoop to sign FC Porto star Victor Froholdt
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, as per TEAMtalk.
After moving to Estadio do Dragao from Danish giants FC Copenhagen last summer, the 20-year-old enjoyed a promising debut campaign, scoring seven goals and registering as many assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
Moreover, he helped his side win the Primeira Liga title. After proving his worth in club football, the youngster has secured his place in the Danish national team.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that after monitoring Froholdt’s development closely last campaign, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him and could make a concrete approach over the coming weeks.
However, the Gunners will have to overcome stiff competition to finalise the operation, as Liverpool and Newcastle United are also interested in this race.
With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2030, the Portuguese giants aren’t in any rush to sell him this summer, but he has a £70m release clause.
If Porto are eventually forced to cash-in on Froholdt, they have identified FC Nordsjaelland star Caleb Yirenkyi as a potential replacement. However, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle United are also interested in the Ghanaian international.
Froholdt to Arsenal
Froholdt, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also efficient in the creative midfield position. He is quick, strong, can make surging runs from deep, can play threading passes between the lines, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Christian Norgaard struggled to find regular game time last term, while Martin Zubimendi faded away during the final few weeks of last campaign. On the other hand, Mikel Merino struggled with fitness problems; as a result, Mikel Arteta decided to use Myles Lewis-Skelly alongside Declan Rice. So, Arsenal could do with signing a new midfielder.
Froholdt is a highly talented young player and possesses the necessary physical attributes to flourish in the Premier League. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure the Porto star’s services this summer.
