Arsenal in fierce battle to sign West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes

By on June 9, 2026

Arsenal are reportedly in a fierce battle to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as per Caught Offside.

Despite winning the Premier League title last term, the Gunners are said to be keen on upgrading a few areas this summer to maintain their level next campaign.

With Gabriel Jesus linked with a move away, Mikel Arteta is keen on purchasing a new striker. On the other hand, following Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard’s inconsistent performances last term, Arsenal are reportedly planning to sign a new left-winger.

Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are also interested in signing a new midfielder and have earmarked Fernandes as a serious option. They have been monitoring the youngster’s situation closely before making a potential swoop.

Having endured relegation, West Ham are highly likely to let Fernandes leave. But he still has a contract until 2030, so they don’t want to sell him cheaply and are asking around £80m.

The report state that West Ham’s valuation won’t be the only obstacle for Arsenal in sealing the deal, as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain have also registered their interest in him, having been impressed by his performances last term.

The Red Devils have been most strongly linked with him, and Fernandes wants to join a club where he can play regularly.

Fernandes to Arsenal

The youngster has endured relegation in the last two consecutive campaigns. Still, he has continued to showcase his qualities in the Premier League. In 42 appearances across all competitions, he made 10 goal contributions last term.

The 21-year-old is a versatile player as he can play anywhere across the middle of the park. He is a top-class player and isn’t a finished article yet. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

After moving to the Emirates Stadium from Brentford last summer, Christian Norgaard struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up. So, it appears the Spanish boss is considering signing a new midfielder to replace the Dane.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure Fernandes’ services by defeating other clubs in this race.
