Arsenal have identified Morgan Gibbs-White as an alternative to Morgan Rogers
Arsenal have earmarked Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White as an alternative to Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, according to The Sun.
Gibbs-White found himself at the centre of one of the most dramatic transfer sagas of last summer’s window.
Reports indicated that a move to Tottenham Hotspur had been agreed, with the midfielder even said to have undergone a medical in North London ahead of the proposed switch.
The transfer ultimately collapsed, however, after Forest threatened legal action over what they believed was an improper approach to their captain. Gibbs-White subsequently returned to the City Ground and shortly afterwards committed his future to the club by signing a new contract.
Only days later, a social media post featuring the midfielder alongside club owner Evangelos Marinakis generated significant attention, as he publicly reaffirmed his dedication to Forest.
Whether he was entirely pleased to remain at the club is debatable, but his performances have left no doubt about his commitment. The England international delivered an outstanding return of 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions for the Tricky Trees during the recently concluded campaign.
Now, in recent months, Arsenal have shown ‘genuine interest’ in Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, who is expected to cost significantly more than his £69m Transfermarkt valuation.
Alternative target
Amid fierce competition for his signature, the club are exploring other targets, with the Sun reporting that the Gunners have identified Gibbs White as a potential alternative to Rogers.
The report adds that the 26-year-old is well-liked by figures in Arsenal’s hierarchy who could launch a swoop to sign him this summer.
However, a deal won’t be easy, as Forest owner Marianakis would be keen on retaining the midfielder at the City Ground, especially with other key players like Elliot Anderson also attracting keen interest, the Sun adds.
Gibbs-White enjoyed a great individual season, scoring 18 goals in all competitions while captaining Forest to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, where Rogers’ inspired Villa side eventually ended their impressive run.
His return of 15 goals in the Premier League made him the second-highest scoring English player in the competition, trailing only Villa striker Ollie Watkins.
Having only extended his contract last summer, Forest would be adamant on retaining him, so Arsenal will have to submit a significant offer well above his £60m Transfermarkt valuation to change their stance.
