Arsenal now eyeing swoop to sign Ferran Torres from Barcelona
Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Barcelona forward Ferran Torres this summer, according to TEAMtalk.
Despite occasionally missing clear-cut chances from close range, the 25-year-old has remained one of FC Barcelona’s most dependable performers since joining from Manchester City in January 2022.
He registered four goals and four assists in his debut campaign before embarking on a sharp upward trajectory, scoring seven times the following season. That was followed by 11 goals and four assists in the 2023-24 campaign. His best return yet came last season, when he produced 26 goal contributions — 19 goals and seven assists — as Hansi Flick’s side secured a domestic treble.
The versatile attacker is now on track for his most productive scoring season in a Barcelona shirt, having accumulated 24 goal contributions in the recently concluded campaign.
It’s no surprise his displays have piqued the interest of several clubs, with TEAMtalk reporting that Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Torres this summer.
The report adds that the Gunners’ boss, Mikel Arteta, is a long-term admirer of the 26-year-old, having worked with him during his stint as assistant manager at Manchester City.
The Premier League winners are exploring attacking options and have identified Torres as a ‘realistic alternative’ should their first-choice target, Julian Álvarez, join Barcelona, according to the report.
In a boost to the North London giants, TEAMtalk reports there’s increasing uncertainty surrounding the versatile forwards, who have been left frustrated by the Blaugrana’s keen interest in Alvarez, with a summer departure now looming.
Fierce battle
As a result, several clubs are now set to battle with Arsenal for Torres’ signature, with TEAMtalk adding that Aston Villa, Chelsea, Como, Real Betis, Monaco, and Ajax are all keen on signing the Spanish international.
Despite being one of the highest scorers in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, Arsenal’s attack has lacked cutting edge and doesn’t quite match the consistency of their defensive resilience.
There’s now a clear need for additional quality depth, especially with Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus facing uncertain futures at the Emirates Stadium.
Torres’ ability to play in different positions across the frontline makes him an appealing option for the Gunners, and there’s an expectation that he won’t struggle to make his mark, having previously won the Premier League title on two occasions.
With just one year left on his contract with Barcelona, Arsenal will hope to agree a fair price to sign the Spaniard, around his £43m Transfermarkt valuation.
