Arsenal keen on signing Mateus Fernandes this summer

By on May 28, 2026

Arsenal are plotting an ambitious swoop to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, according to Fichajes.

Since completing his move to the London Stadium last summer, the 21-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most impressive young midfielders, featuring in 42 matches across all competitions while registering ten goal contributions in the recently concluded Premier League season.

Even amid a challenging season for the Hammers, his performances were enough to secure a first senior call-up to the Portugal national football team during the March international break, where he went on to make his debut in a 2–0 win over the United States.

With West Ham already relegated after finishing 18th, several key players could explore possible departures, and Fernandes is expected to become one of the most sought-after players in the summer transfer window.

According to Fichajes, Arsenal have expressed keen interest in signing the Portuguese midfielder in the summer.

The Gunners’ boss, Mikel Arteta, is looking for a young midfield ‘maestro’ for his squad and has made Fernandes among his priorities for the summer, as per the report.

With four years left in his contract, West Ham will look to recoup a significant fee should they consider his sale, and it’s no surprise the Spanish outlet reports that the East Londoners will demand an £80m fee to sanction his departure.

However, Fichajes adds that Arsenal face stern competition from European giants Paris Saint-Germain, who are leading the race and are looking to initiate club-to-club talks, while Premier League rivals Manchester United have also expressed interest in the youngster.

Christian Nørgaard replacement?

While Arsenal are looking to reinforce their squad further, some departures are also expected, with several fringe players likely to depart the club.

Christian Nørgaard is among those who could move on after finding it difficult to secure a consistent starting role following his arrival from Brentford.

Hence, Fernandes’ numbers this season — both in cumulative terms and on a per-game basis — suggest he could be a suitable option to step into the Gunners’ midfield should the Norwegian seal an exit this summer.

On the ball, the 21-year-old has recorded an 87.6% pass completion rate alongside a 59.1% dribble success rate throughout the campaign.

Off the ball, his defensive work has been just as compelling, with averages of 5.98 tackles, 5.46 ball recoveries, and an eye-catching 10.95 defensive contributions per game.

His qualities make him an archetypal player to thrive under Arteta, so Arsenal will need to act swiftly to secure his signature amid keen interest from PSG.
