Arsenal battling with Liverpool to sign Anthony Gordon
Arsenal are reportedly battling with Liverpool over a deal to sign Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, as per transfer journalist Ben Jacobs.
The Magpies have endured a disappointing campaign under Eddie Howe this season, finishing mid-table in the Premier League with 49 points from 38 matches.
Meaning, the Tyneside club have failed to qualify for next season’s European competition. As a result, several of their stars have been heavily linked with a move away ahead of the summer window.
Alongside Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Lewis Hall have been attracting a lot of attention. Now, on X, Jacobs states that Arsenal have registered their interest in the former Everton star to upgrade the left flank and could make a formal approach during the offseason.
However, the Gunners will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also in this race. The Reds hold a long-standing interest in the Englishman, while the Bavarian club have been in talks with the player’s representatives over a potential move this summer.
Apart from the Newcastle star, Liverpool are also interested in RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola to bolster the frontline.
Jacobs wrote:
“Liverpool have a historical interest in Anthony Gordon, who almost joined in summer 2024, but it is Bayern who remain in talks. Arsenal another club who appreciate Gordon.”
Gordon to Arsenal
The 25-year-old is valued at around £52m by Transfermarkt and has a contract until 2030. So, Newcastle are in a strong position to demand a huge fee if they are forced to cash-in.
Since moving to St James’ Park from Everton, Gordon has showcased his qualities in recent years. Moreover, following Alexander Isak’s departure last summer, he has established himself as a talismanic figure.
In 46 appearances across all competitions, the Englishman has netted 17 goals and registered five assists in 46 appearances this season. After proving his worth in club football, he has secured his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England national team for this summer’s World Cup.
Gordon is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service ahead of next season.
