Arsenal ‘pushing’ to sign Alvaro Carreras from Real Madrid
Arsenal are ‘pushing’ to sign Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras from Real Madrid next summer, according to Ekrem Konur.
Carreras first arrived at Manchester United from Madrid’s academy in the summer of 2020. After immediately stamping his authority in the academy ranks, he was sent on loan to Preston North End to develop further and gain more playing time.
Upon his return, first-team opportunities remained difficult due to the presence of Luke Shaw and Alex Telles, and he was sent to Granada before completing a permanent deal to Benfica.
It was with the 38-time Primeira Liga champions that he made significant strides, featuring 68 times across all competitions and winning the Portuguese Cup last season.
After impressing on loan, Madrid swooped in the summer to sign him for a fee slightly below his £52m Transfermarkt valuation, and he has since become a mainstay in the first team despite the managerial changes.
The 23-year-old has played in 25 LaLiga games and 37 in all competitions, where his qualities have been on full display, with interest now growing ahead of the summer.
One of the clubs showing interest in Carreras is Arsenal, according to Ekrem Konur, who claims that the Gunners are ‘pushing’ to sign the Spanish left-back next summer.
The North London club view the youngster as a long-term investment, with Mikel Arteta promising a more prominent role in the first team should he join, the journalist reports.
Arsenal ‘pushing’ for Carreras
However, Konur adds that Arsenal will have to battle Premier League rivals Manchester United, as well as Italian giants Juventus and Napoli, for the Spanish U21 international’s signature when the transfer window opens.
Mikel Arteta currently has Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Piero Hincapié as left-back options within his Arsenal squad.
Although Hincapié is presently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, the expectation is that the move will be made permanent at the end of the season. With that in mind, Arsenal appear well stocked in that position, especially with Jurrien Timber also capable of filling in when required.
However, uncertainty surrounding Lewis-Skelly’s future could open the door for another addition in the summer.
Furthermore, both Hincapié and Calafiori are naturally centre-backs, which explains why Arteta is targeting a specialist left-back, with Carreras now emerging as a potential option.
With five years left in his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, Arsenal will need to submit a significant offer to convince Madrid to sanction his departure in the summer.
