Arsenal are reportedly ‘firmly’ in the race to sign Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, as per TEAMtalk.

The 23-year-old started his youth career with Pamplona before spending a very brief spell at Osasuna. He joined Los Leones’academy at the age of 11.

After coming through their youth system, the forward made his first team debut back in 2021 before establishing himself as a talismanic figure in recent times.

Williams enjoyed his best during the 2023/24 season, making 24 goal contributions across all competitions. Moreover, he scored 11 goals and registered seven assists last term. However, the Spaniard hasn’t been at his best this season, with fitness problems being a key reason.

After showcasing his qualities in club football, Williams has secured his place in the Spanish national team’s starting line-up, helping his country win the European Championship in 2024.

He has been linked with a move away for several years, with Arsenal frequently mentioned as a potential destination. However, the forward opted to commit his long-term future to his boyhood club by signing a new deal until 2035 last summer.

Still, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal remain ‘firmly’ interested in signing him, with Mikel Arteta’s side exploring options to replace Gabriel Martinelli following his below-average performances in recent years.

Williams to Arsenal

The Gunners have been monitoring Williams’ development for a long time, and their sporting director, Andrea Berta, is a ‘huge admirer’ of the Spanish international. So, they could make a concrete approach to finally secure his service this summer.

Like Arsenal, Barcelona are also a long-term admirer of Williams, but they are prioritising reinforcing other areas of the squad this summer.

Williams currently has a £78m release clause in his contract, but Arsenal have no intention of signing him by spending that much and value him at around £50m.

Williams is a right-footed left-winger. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, is efficient in finishing off his chances, and can also create opportunities for fellow attackers.

He is a highly talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service during the offseason.
