Arsenal plot swoop to sign Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Celta Vigo defender Óscar Mingueza, as per The Telegraph.
Following a disappointing defeat against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League, the Gunners were under significant pressure. However, they are set to face Manchester City in a potentially title-deciding fixture this weekend, having secured a positive result against Sporting CP in the Champions League.
After overcoming the Lions’ challenge 1–0 on aggregate, Mikel Arteta’s side have reached the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition, where they will face Atletico Madrid. This means Arsenal can still end the season with two major trophies.
Meanwhile, with the summer window approaching quickly, the North London club have started exploring options to strengthen the squad further and maintain their level next season.
Now, as per The Telegraph (via Metro), Arsenal are considering refreshing the right-back position as Ben White has been linked with a move away, having struggled with fitness problems in recent years.
They have identified Newcastle United star Valentino Livramento as the primary target to replace the former Brighton and Hove Albion star. However, the Magpies are likely to demand a huge fee to sell him; as a result, Arsenal have earmarked Mingueza as a cheaper alternative option.
The Spaniard has entered the final few months of his current contract and is said to be willing to leave for free to take the next step in his career.
Mingueza to Arsenal
Mingueza, valued at around £16m by Transfermarkt, is a right-footed versatile player. He is comfortable playing in the right-back and RWB positions; moreover, he can provide cover on the opposite side. The 26-year-old is even efficient in the centre-back position if needed.
Arteta likes having defenders who can be deployed in multiple areas, and considering Mingueza is technically sound, he would be an ideal option to play in Arteta’s possession-based system.
The Celta star, standing at 6ft tall, is quick, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming summer transfer window.
