Noni Madueke suffers injury in fresh Arsenal injury blow
Arsenal have been handed an injury blow after England national team boss Thomas Tuchel said he was ‘worried’ for Noni Madueke after he was forced off in the first half of the Three Lions’ 1-1 draw with Uruguay on Friday.
Madueke was deployed on the right flank for an experimental England side during Friday night’s pre-FIFA World Cup friendly at Wembley Stadium, stepping in with Bukayo Saka rested. Still, his outing was cut short as Jarrod Bowen replaced him late in the first half.
The 24-year-old was involved in a heavy collision with Rodrigo Aguirre when the Uruguay forward attempted to block his effort, leaving him landing awkwardly on his left knee.
After receiving treatment, he eventually limped off seven minutes before the interval, with concerns over a serious issue growing further when he was later seen moving through the mixed zone at Wembley following the 1–1 draw, wearing a brace on his left leg.
Although the nature and extent of the injury are not yet revealed, Tuchel said he was ‘worried’ after his withdrawal but expressed optimism that the issue was not severe.
Blow
‘I’m worried, of course, because I think he was a difference-maker today,’ Tuchel said.
‘He started well; he was full of energy; he was ready to go.
‘And I think against a team like Uruguay, who relies on one-against-ones, to isolate them there and to go in one-against-ones from every minute out there, the spaces open up, and he could have been a key player for us, which he is.
‘Very sad and upset, and hopefully it’s not a big injury.’
That situation will raise concerns for Mikel Arteta, who is already dealing with several injury concerns, including Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Leandro Trossard, and Martin Ødegaard.
The Arsenal manager will be eager to get his side back to winning form after the international break while keeping their push for a treble on track.
Before the pause in club action, the Gunners were beaten in the EFL Cup final by Manchester City.
Their return fixture is an FA Cup quarter-final away at Southampton next Saturday, followed by the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Sporting CP in Portugal on Tuesday.
They resume Premier League duties on April 11 when they host Bournemouth as they look to maintain their nine-point lead at the top of the table.
