Arsenal in fierce battle to sign Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali
Arsenal are reportedly in a fierce battle to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali, as per the Daily Mail.
Despite revamping the midfield department by signing Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi last summer, the Gunners are said to be planning to sign a new midfielder.
Although the Spaniard has turned out to be a successful acquisition, the Dane has struggled to find regular game time this season, failing to commence a Premier League game yet.
With Mikel Merino remaining sidelined due to his injury, Zubimendi and Declan Rice have been taking on enormous workloads. Still, Arsenal have enjoyed a stellar campaign, mounting a treble charge.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Arsenal are planning to reinforce the midfield department by signing Tonali and could make a concrete approach during the offseason.
Although the player still has three years left in his current contract, with the Magpies having an option to extend the deal for a further year, they might be open to cashing-in on him if the player asks to leave.
Newcastle feel they need to raise funds by selling stars to add new acquisitions this summer and don’t want to repeat an Alexander Isak scenario once again.
Tonali to Arsenal
However, the report state that Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are also interested in him. Moreover, the Red Devils are currently the frontrunners in this race after intensifying their efforts to finalise the operation in recent days.
Tonali, valued at around £69m by Transfermarkt, is a versatile player as he can play anywhere across the middle of the park. He is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.
He even helped Italy win the World Cup qualification playoff semi-final against Northern Ireland 2-0 by scoring the opener and providing the second goal.
Therefore, the 25-year-old would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see where Tonali ends up if he eventually leaves Newcastle this summer.
Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the international break, Arsenal will resume their campaign against Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final next month.
