Arsenal eye summer move to sign Emmanuel Fernandez
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, as per TEAMtalk.
Since joining the Scottish giants from Peterborough United last summer, the 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar debut campaign, scoring five goals and keeping 10 clean sheets in 25 appearances across all competitions.
Moreover, the Nigerian has been helping his side to mount a title charge in the Scottish Premiership, sitting only three points behind league leader Hearts with two games left to play.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that, impressed by Fernandez, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him and have been monitoring his development closely before making a potential swoop.
However, the African’s recent eye-catching performances haven’t just attracted the Gunners’ attention, as Chelsea, West Ham United, and Everton are also in this race.
Apart from Premier League clubs, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, and Club Brugge have also expressed interest in the Nigerian.
With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2029, Rangers aren’t in any rush to sell him and want to keep him for one more season at least. However, they will change their stance should they receive a formal proposal worth around £35m.
Fernandez to Arsenal
Calvin Bassey’s move to Ajax in a £19.6m deal back in 2022 is currently the record departure of the Scottish giants. So, Fernandez would become their new record sale if Arsenal or any other club eventually opt to secure his service by matching the asking price.
Fernandez is a 6ft 6in tall right-footed centre-back by trait but can also provide cover in the right-back position. He is quick, strong, excellent in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, has the ability to chip in with some important goals, and is also efficient in defensive contributions.
Fernandez possesses the necessary physical attributes to flourish in the Premier League and isn’t a finished article yet. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal to add depth to the centre-back position if they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services during the offseason.
