Arsenal preparing audacious formal offer to sign Sandro Tonali

Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali next summer, according to Tuttojuve.

The Italian international was immediately handed a ten-month ban soon after completing a big-money move to St James’ Park from AC Milan in 2023. Since his return to action in August 2024, Tonali has emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, most notably playing a key role in the Magpies’ historic Carabao Cup triumph.

His outstanding performances have continued this season, where he has provided seven assists and three goals in 46 games across all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side, while forming a formidable partnership with club captain Bruno Guimarães in the middle of the park.

In the recently concluded January transfer window, Tonali was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the wake of Mikel Merino’s long-term injury, only for the rumours to be debunked by major sources.

However, it appears Arsenal still have a concrete interest in Tonali, as TuttoJuve claims the Premier League table-toppers are preparing to submit an audacious £86m formal offer to Newcastle for the 25-year-old’s potential transfer to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal reignite interest in Tonali

Having rebuffed every interest in the Italian in January, the Italian outlet reports that the Magpies could change their stance in the summer if they receive a ‘high-value offer’, with the Gunners now preparing a bid.

Tuttojuve adds that Mikel Arteta’s side are now set to face stern competition from European giants Real Madrid, who have earmarked Tonali as an ‘ideal candidate’ to bolster their midfield ranks.

Despite keen interest from the 15-time Champions League winners, Arsenal are the only club ready to make a formal move for the Italian international, who is seen as a viable option as they look to build a more competitive squad, according to the report.

In the ongoing campaign, Tonali has made 123 recoveries, 26 interceptions, and won 90 duels. His qualities on the ball and in the final third are also impressive, as he has created 26 chances, completed 84.9% of his passes, and recorded 1,638 touches.

For a team that has built a reputation on aerial dominance, Tonali’s 50.0% aerial duel success would give set-piece coach Nicolas Jover a key outlet in both attacking and defending set pieces should the move to the Emirates materialise.
