Arsenal interested in signing West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as per a recent report.
Although Southampton finished at the bottom of the Premier League table last term, the 21-year-old showed glimpses of his qualities. After being impressed by the youngster’s performances, the Hammers decided to sign him last summer.
The East London club have displayed disappointing performances this season, languishing in the relegation zone. But Fernandes has continued to showcase his high potential, scoring four goals and registering as many assists in 32 appearances across all competitions.
Now, as per a recent report (via TEAMtalk), Arsenal are considering adding depth to the engine room despite already having Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Christian Norgaard, and have identified Fernandes as an ‘ideal’ option.
Fernandes is highly likely to leave the London Stadium if they fail to keep hold of their top-flight status. However, West Ham have no intention of letting him leave in a cut-price deal, with his existing deal set to run until 2030, and have slapped a £65m price tag on his head.
The report state that Fernandes’ recent eye-catching performances haven’t just attracted Arsenal’s attention, as Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool are also keen on him.
The West Ham star is a defensive midfielder by trait but is also efficient in the box-to-box role. Furthermore, he can provide cover in the creative midfield position if needed.
Fernandes to Arsenal
He is quick across the ground, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for scoring goals from distance, and is also efficient in defensive contributions.
Fernandes is still very young and has shown glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League this season. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
With Norgaard struggling to find regular game time this season, Arsenal need a long-term replacement for the Dane, who is set to turn 33 next year. Moreover, his existing deal is set to expire at the end of next season.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming summer transfer window to strengthen the engine room.
