Arsenal now eyeing move for Dortmund star Julian Brandt
Arsenal are closely monitoring Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Julian Brandt ahead of a possible summer move, according to Patrick Berger.
While the German may not be entirely familiar with English football, English football supporters may certainly remember the midfielder from his formative years at Dortmund, where he was frequently linked with several Premier League clubs, with Liverpool reportedly showing the strongest interest during the early years of Jürgen Klopp’s tenure at Anfield.
Brandt joined Dortmund from Bayer Leverkusen in July 2019 and has made 298 competitive appearances for the club, registering 56 goals and 68 assists.
The 29-year-old has also won the DFB-Pokal and German Super Cup in his time at the club and played a crucial role in Die Borussen’s run to the 2024 UEFA Champions League final under Edin Terzić, where they unfortunately lost to Real Madrid.
In the ongoing campaign, Brandt has been a key part of Dortmund’s team, netting ten goals and providing three assists in what could be his final season at the Signal Iduna Park.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the midfielder is attracting keen interest from top European clubs, including Arsenal.
This is according to Sky Sports Deutschland’s Patrick Berger, who claims that the Premier League table leaders have been keeping tabs on the former Wolfsburg starlet ahead of the summer transfer window.
Arsenal eye bargain Brandt swoop
The German transfer expert adds that Brandt is set to become a free agent after seven years with Dortmund and is seeking new experience abroad, with England now among his potential destinations amid interest from the Gunners.
However, the North London club are yet to establish any concrete talks for the German midfielder, who is also of keen interest to Spanish champions Barcelona, Berger adds.
It is now almost certain that Brandt will depart Dortmund in the summer, after the club’s director, Lars Ricken, said after Dortmund’s 2-1 win at Cologne that the German would not renew his contract.
He said via Sky Germany, ‘After open talks, we agreed that the contract that is set to expire would not be renewed.’
This would be a boost to Arsenal, as they won’t have to pay his £17m Transfermarkt valuation but would instead be getting an experienced, creative, and tireless midfielder that suits Mikel Arteta’s system at a bargain free transfer, should the deal be completed.
