Honest Ahanor Atalanta

Arsenal are reportedly planning to launch a formal proposal to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, as per Caught Offside.

After coming through Genoa’s youth system, the 18-year-old joined La Dea last summer. In 16 starts across all competitions, the youngster has netted a solitary goal and kept five clean sheets thus far this season.

Ahonor has been helping his side push for a European place finish in Serie A, sitting only one point behind fifth-placed Juventus. Moreover, he helped Raffaele Palladino’s side overcome Borussia Dortmund’s challenge in the Champions League playoff tie despite losing the first leg 2-0.

Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Ahanor after monitoring his development closely over the last few months.

The North London club are even prepared to launch a formal £30m bid to seal the deal, with his existing contract set to run until 2028.

Apart from the Gunners, Chelsea and Manchester City have also been keeping a close eye on his development, with the Citizens set to launch a £30m formal bid as well.

Ahanor is a 6ft tall left-footed defender. He is comfortable in the left-back and centre-back positions. Moreover, he is efficient in the LWB role.

Ahanor to Arsenal

Arsenal currently have Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapié, and Myles Lewis-Skelly as options to deploy in the left-back position, while Gabriel Magalhaes is the LCB. Hincapié and Calafiori are also efficient in the centre-back position.

Hincapié joined on a loan deal from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, and the Gunners are expected to seal the deal permanently at the end of this season.

So, on paper, Arsenal are well-stocked on the left side of the defence. However, Calafiori has struggled with fitness problems since joining from Bologna, and Lewis-Skelly has failed to showcase his best this season.

As a result, it appears the North London club are looking to sign a new defender, and Ahanor could be a shrewd acquisition with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in the upcoming summer transfer window.
