Arsenal showing ‘aggressive interest’ in signing Lukeba
Arsenal are reportedly showing ‘aggressive interest’ in signing RB Leipzig star Castello Lukeba, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Since moving to Red Bull Arena from Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais in 2023, the Frenchman has showcased glimpses of his qualities in the Bundesliga.
In 19 appearances across all competitions, the 23-year-old has made two goal contributions and kept seven clean sheets this season. Moreover, the youngster has been helping his side mount a top-four charge, sitting fourth in the table with 39 points from 21 matches.
Now, Fichajes state that despite already having William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes as the primary centre-back options, Arsenal are keen on adding depth to this position as Ben White could leave at the end of this season.
The Gunners have identified Lukeba as the ‘top target’ as he is physically strong, quick, technically sound, and comfortable playing out from the back. So, they are showing ‘aggressive interest’ in sealing the deal.
The Frenchman has a £70m release clause in his current contract, with his existing deal set to run until 2029. However, the German side might be open to letting him leave for a discount price of around £52m.
However, the report state that Arsenal aren’t the only club interested in Lukeba as Real Madrid are also in this race, and they have been monitoring his development closely before making a potential swoop.
Lukeba to Arsenal
Los Blancos want a new centre-back as Eder Militao has struggled with fitness problems, while Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba’s existing deals are set to expire at the end of this season.
Lukeba is a talented player and possesses high potential. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, Mikel Arteta already has Cristhian Mosquera, Riccardo Calafiori, and Piero Hincapié as options to deploy in the centre-back position apart from Saliba and Gabriel.
Moreover, Jurrien Timber is efficient in this area. So, Arsenal don’t need to invest more to add further depth to this position unless anyone leaves. On the other hand, the Leipzig star has struggled with fitness problems in recent years.
Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in the summer.
