Arsenal plot swoop to sign Sandro Tonali in the summer
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a summer move to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, as per The Sun.
Following Mikel Merino’s recent injury, it was reported that the Gunners were willing to sign the Italian on deadline day to reinforce the midfield department.
However, the player’s agent made it clear that there was no contact with the North London club over a potential mid-season move, and that the Magpies had no intention of letting him leave.
Now, The Sun report that although Tonali didn’t leave in January, he might be open to a new challenge in the summer if Newcastle eventually fail to secure Champions League football next season.
Although the former AC Milan star is happy at St James’ Park, he wants to continue competing at the highest level, with Newcastle sitting in mid-table and eight points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United.
Mikel Arteta is a ‘huge admirer’ of Tonali and is planning to create a double midfield pivot of Declan Rice and the Italian. So, Arsenal are planning to make a move for him next summer.
However, Manchester City are also in this race, with Pep Guardiola a big fan of him. Moreover, Chelsea are plotting a swoop as well. So, the midfielder isn’t short of potential suitors.
Tonali to Arsenal
With Tonali’s existing deal set to run until 2028, Newcastle are in a strong position if they are forced to cash-in on him and have slapped a whopping £100m price tag on his head.
The 25-year-old is a defensive midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the box-to-box role. Having proven his worth in club football, he has secured his place in the Italian national team’s starting line-up.
Tonali is a Premier League-proven player and would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Considering Christian Norgaard has struggled to find regular game time thus far this season, signing a new midfielder to support Rice and Martin Zubimendi might be the right decision for Arsenal.
