Arsenal urged to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez
Former forward turned pundit, Gary Lineker, has urged Arsenal to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
The Gunners currently have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard as left-wing options, while Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke are right-wingers.
On the other hand, Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Jesus, and Kai Havertz are the strikers. However, Havertz has struggled with fitness problems thus far this season, while Jesus has just returned to action after recovering from a serious knee injury.
Although Arsenal currently have depth in the frontline, their attackers have struggled to score goals in recent months. Saka hasn’t been able to put his name on the scoresheet in the last 13 appearances across all competitions.
Gyokeres, meanwhile, has failed to score a non-penalty goal in the last 11 Premier League matches, while Martinelli hasn’t been able to find the net in the league since September.
Madueke is yet to score his first Premier League goal for Arsenal, and Trossard has netted only once in the last 11 appearances in all tournaments.
Eberechi Eze enjoyed a stellar start at the Emirates Stadium since joining from Crystal Palace last summer, but hasn’t been able to make any goal contributions over the last two months.
Arsenal urged to sign Alvarez
Now, on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker has urged Arsenal to sign Alvarez to address their goal-scoring problems. The Argentinian is a World Cup winner and would be the perfect option for the North London club to win major silverware.
Lineker said:
“I saw they were linked with Julian Alvarez who I know is not entirely happy with life at Atletico. Now that is the sort of player you know can handle the big occasion – he’s a World Cup winner for crying out loud. Someone like that at Arsenal would be game over. But they do need one or two of these current forwards to start scoring on a reasonably regular basis.”
Having joined Los Rojiblancos from Manchester City ahead of last season, Alvarez, valued at around £87m by Transfermarkt, has a contract until 2030. So, the Spanish giants are in a strong position to demand a huge fee if they are forced to cash-in.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services this year.
