Arsenal hold an advantage in race to sign Julian Alvarez

By on January 24, 2026

Arsenal reportedly hold an advantage in the race to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, as per talkSPORT.

The Gunners reinforced the centre-forward position by purchasing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP last summer. However, he has found it difficult to adapt to the Premier League’s physicality thus far.

Mikel Arteta also has Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz as the striker options. However, the Brazilian has struggled with fitness problems in recent years.

After recovering from a lengthy knee injury, Jesus has shown glimpses of his qualities in recent matches. However, his long-term future is reportedly not secured at the Emirates Stadium.

On the other hand, Havertz has also been struggling with fitness problems in recent years. After recovering from a serious hamstring problem, he has been suffering from a knee issue over the last few months. Although he has returned recently, his minutes need to be measured carefully.

Now, talkSPORT report that Arsenal are interested in signing a new striker and have already made contact to sign Alvarez. Although Barcelona are also keen on him and are a favourite in this race, Andrea Berta could be a key in helping the Gunners win this race.

Berta has close links with the Argentinian international after negotiating the move from Manchester City to Los Rojiblancos.

Alvarez to Arsenal

Having joined Atletico in 2024, the Argentinian still has four and a half years left in his current contract. So, the Spanish giants are in a strong position to demand a big fee to sell him and have slapped a whopping £87m price tag on his head.

Alvarez is a centre-forward by trait but is also comfortable in the second striker role. However, Diego Simeone hasn’t always used him in his preferred position.

Although he displayed his productivity last term, he hasn’t been able to replicate that thus far this term. Still, he has made 16 goal contributions across all competitions.

The 25-year-old is one of the best forwards in the world and would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in January or next summer.
