Arsenal urged to start Gabriel Jesus over Viktor Gyokeres
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to start Gabriel Jesus as the centre-forward over Viktor Gyokeres.
Following Kai Havertz and Jesus’ injury problems, the Gunners decided to reinforce the No.9 position by purchasing the Swedish international from Sporting CP last summer.
He was the highest scorer in Europe over the last two seasons, and the North Londoners thought he would be able to make a similar impact to what Erling Haaland did at Manchester City.
However, Gyokeres has struggled in the Premier League thus far, scoring only five times in 17 matches. He has scored only twice in the last 13 league games, with one of those coming from the penalty spot.
He started vs Aston Villa on Tuesday night but failed to put his name on the scoresheet, while Jesus scored an excellent goal after replacing the Swede.
Now, on Sky Sports (via Metro), Carragher says that although Jesus isn’t a natural finisher, he is a ‘fantastic’ footballer and is better than Gyokeres, so the former Man City star should start over Gyokeres for Arsenal in the striker position.
Although Gyokeres is a hard-working player, he lacks finesse, and Arsenal need a better player than him to compete with the Citizens for the Premier League title. Jesus is better than Gyokeres, and when fit, Havertz is also an upgrade to the former Sporting star.

Carragher said:
“I’m a huge fan of Jesus. He’s not always been an amazing finisher but he is a fantastic footballer. I think maybe the only negative of the night for Arsenal is that Gyokeres shouldn’t be starting for Arsenal when they’ve got players like this (Jesus). I think in a couple of games’ time when Jesus is a little bit more up to speed, he’s a better player than Gyokeres. That’s a fact.”
Meanwhile, following a thumping 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, Arsenal have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points, though second-placed Man City have a game in hand.
Now, the North London club will travel to Vitality Stadium to take on AFC Bournemouth on Saturday before facing off against Liverpool next week.
