Arteta confirms Arsenal January transfer plans

By on December 30, 2025

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal will actively look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window.

The manager spoke during his pre match conference ahead of the Premier League clash against Aston Villa.

Arsenal currently sit at the top of the table and remain firmly in the title race. They hold a narrow advantage over Manchester City and understand the need for a strong squad depth.

With the season entering a demanding phase, the Gunners are aware that injuries and fatigue can shape the title run in.

Arteta made it clear that planning ahead will be vital if Arsenal want to stay competitive.

Arteta highlights squad depth concerns

Speaking ahead of the Villa game, Arteta explained that the club is closely watching the recovery of injured players.

He stressed that availability across all positions will be key during the second half of the season.

We’re going to be really aware of the situation and the timescale of certain players [returning from injury],” he suggested.

“If you go from the front line to the back line, that’s the depth that you need.”

Arteta also pointed to the size of squads across the league when discussing Arsenal’s position.

“When you look across the other clubs, they have 24 or 25 players, so there’s nothing special in our squad.”

The Arsenal boss admitted that injuries have caused problems earlier in the campaign.

He explained that some of those setbacks were hard to avoid but still impacted the team.

The thing is, we’ve had more injuries than expected, some of them not avoidable, I would say, but we want to be better,” he said.

“We know how important the part of having the right availability with players is going to play in the season.”

January window firmly on Arsenal agenda

Arteta made it clear that Arsenal will not ignore the January transfer window. He explained that the club must always be ready to act when the chance arises.

The window is there. We’re Arsenal and we have to be looking at it and saying ‘OK, what do we need?’

We have to be actively looking, and then can we do it or not?”

The manager added that preparation remains the most important part of the process.

That’s a different story, but our job is to always be very prepared because something can happen.”

Arteta also addressed the topic of possible player departures during the window.

He explained that every situation will be reviewed carefully before any decision is made.

Again, we assess every situation, I leave that much more to Andrea [Berta] to understand what’s happening in the market and then the individual players obviously.”

He stressed the need to find the best outcome for both the club and the players involved.

We have to assess where we are with each of them and get the best situation.”

Arsenal will now aim to finish 2025 at the top of the Premier League table.

Their focus remains on maintaining form, managing injuries, and making the right choices in January.
