Arsenal make contact to sign Aleksandar Stankovic
Arsenal have reportedly made contact to sign Club Brugge midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic, as per a recent Italian report.
Although the Gunners have been struggling with numerous fitness problems since the start of this season, they have continued their title march, sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 42 points from 18 matches.
Mikel Arteta’s side have suffered most injuries at the back, with Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White set to remain sidelined over the coming weeks.
After recovering from a muscular problem, Gabriel Magalhaes returned to action against Brighton last weekend, while Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori have picked up injuries recently. William Saliba was also out for a few games.
Apart from the defence, Noni Madueke, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus, Viktor Gyokeres, and Gabriel Martinelli all had injury problems; thankfully, they have recovered from their issues. But Kai Havertz remains sidelined due to a knee injury.
So, it appears the North London club are planning to add depth to their squad in January to help Arteta continue the title march in the second half of this season.
La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) report that Arsenal are interested in signing a new midfielder and have earmarked Stankovic as a serious option.
They have already held talks to learn about the details of signing him, but purchasing the Serbian won’t be straightforward, as Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on him and have made contact to finalise the deal as well.
Stankovic to Arsenal
The 20-year-old came through Inter Milan’s youth system before joining Club Brugge, and they have a €23m buyback option. They are even preparing to re-sign him and sell him for a big profit.
It has been reported that Arsenal are ready to table a formal proposal worth around £35m, including bonuses, to secure his service following his return to the Nerazzurri, but they want more than that sum.
Stankovic is comfortable playing in the double midfield pivot role and in the box-to-box position. He is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services next year.
