Arsenal showing ‘great interest’ in Aleksandar Stankovic

Arsenal are reportedly showing a ‘great interest’ in signing Club Brugge midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic, as per Italian outlet L’Interista.

The 20-year-old is the son of former Nerazzurri star Dejan Stankovic, and he came through the Italian giants’ youth system. However, he failed to break into their first XI, so he joined Swiss Super League club Luzern on a loan deal ahead of last season to play regularly and develop his career.

After being impressed by the youngster’s performances at the Swissporarena, Club Brugge decided to sign him permanently last summer, leaving Inter without him making a single appearance for the club.

This season, Stankovic has established himself as a key starter at Jan Breydel Stadium, helping his side mount a title charge in the Belgian Pro League. They are currently sitting only three points behind league leader, USG.

After displaying eye-catching performances for Club Brugge, Stankovic has secured his place in the Serbian national team.

Now, L’Interista claim that, having been impressed by the midfielder’s performances, Arsenal have started showing ‘great interest’ in signing him and could make a concrete approach next year.

However, Inter are also interested in him and hold a buyback clause. They are planning to exercise the option to bring him back.

Stankovic to Arsenal

Stankovic, valued at around £13m by Transfermarkt, is a defensive midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the box-to-box position.

He, standing at 6ft 1in tall, is quick, strong, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, is efficient in taking set-pieces, good in defensive contributions, and is also strong in the air.

Mikel Arteta had the opportunity to watch the player in action closely when Arsenal faced Club Brugge in the Champions League earlier this month. Although the Belgian side lost the game 3-0, Stankovic displayed a solid performance.

The Brugge star is a highly talented player and possesses high potential. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in January or next summer.
