Arsenal are reportedly ‘working behind the scenes’ to sign Real Madrid defender Victor Valdepeñas, as per German outlet Bild.

The 19-year-old started his youth career at AD Villa Rosa before joining Rayo Vallecano back in 2016. He moved to Los Blancos’ La Fabrica academy a couple of years later before joining Leganés’ youth system.

However, he returned to Real Madrid in 2022 and made his first-team debut against Deportivo Alavés in La Liga last weekend, helping his side win the game 2-1.

Now, Bild (via Sport Witness) report that Borussia Dortmund are interested in Valdepeñas and are planning to persuade him to join by offering regular playing time.

However, purchasing the 19-year-old won’t be straightforward for the German giants, as Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen are in this race as well. Moreover, the Gunners have started ‘working behind the scenes’ to seal the deal ahead of other clubs.

The youngster still has a contract until 2029 at the Estadio Bernabéu; therefore, the Spanish giants aren’t in any rush to let him leave in January or next summer.

Valdepeñas, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a left-footed player and is comfortable playing in the centre-back position as well as left-back. He is technically sound and is efficient in playing out from the back.

Valdepeñas to Arsenal

Arsenal decided to reinforce the backline by purchasing Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié last summer. However, they have suffered numerous injury problems at the back this season, with Gabriel Magalhaes and Mosquera set to remain sidelined for a few weeks.

So, perhaps Mikel Arteta is planning to add further depth to the defence in January to continue the title march, as they sit at the top of the Premier League table with 36 points from 16 matches.

Valdepeñas is a talented player and possesses high potential, so he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in January or next summer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will face off against Everton in the Premier League this weekend before taking on Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup next week.
