Arsenal eye surprise swoop to sign Scott McTominay
Arsenal are reportedly planning to seal a surprise swoop to sign Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, as per Caught Offside.
After moving to Diego Armando Maradona Stadium from Manchester United last year, the 28-year-old enjoyed a stellar debut campaign in Serie A, helping his side win the Scudetto.
He made 17 goal contributions across all competitions and became the best player of the Italian top flight. This season, the Scotsman has continued to display impressive performances, guiding Antonio Conte’s side to mount a title charge once again.
They are currently third in Serie A but are only two points behind table topper AS Roma. McTominay has made six goal contributions in all tournaments thus far.
Alongside displaying his qualities in club football, the midfielder has also impressed on the international stage, leading his nation to qualify for next summer’s World Cup. Scotland have qualified for the sports world’s biggest extravaganza for the first time since 1998.
Now, Caught Offside claim that McTominay’s recent eye-catching performances have attracted Arsenal’s attention, and they are monitoring his situation closely before making a potential swoop.
Mikel Arteta believes McTominay’s energy and versatility would be perfect to complement Declan Rice. However, purchasing the experienced midfielder won’t be straightforward for the North London club, as Man Utd are interested in bringing him back.
McTominay to Arsenal
Napoli have no intention of letting their key player leave next year, with his existing deal set to run until 2028, and they have slapped a £60m price tag on his head to fend off potential suitors. McTominay himself is even happy in Italy and isn’t pushing to return to the UK.
Arsenal currently have Rice, Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Christian Norgaard, Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, and Ethan Nwaneri as options to deploy in the midfield department.
Therefore, Arsenal don’t need a new midfielder unless anyone leaves next year. So, Arteta’s side might be better off saving the money to reinforce other areas of the squad instead of purchasing McTominay.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to sign the Napoli star in January or next summer.
