Arsenal battling with Chelsea to sign Barcelona’s Casado
Arsenal are reportedly battling with Chelsea over a deal to sign Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado, as per Caught Offside.
The Gunners have allowed Manchester City to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table after drawing against Sunderland last weekend.
At the moment, Mikel Arteta’s side hold only a four-point lead over the second-placed City. Arsenal went head-to-head with the Citizens for the title twice in the last three years, with Pep Guardiola’s side coming out on top both times.
Following Man City’s thumping victory over Liverpool, they have started showing signs of their best, which are worrying signs for Arsenal. Beating a peak Guardiola team in a title race is notoriously difficult..
In the meantime, although Arsenal reinforced several areas of the squad last summer, they are considering adding more firepower next year to maintain their level.
Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are planning to buy a new midfielder, and Casado is on their radar. However, purchasing the Barcelona star won’t be straightforward, as Chelsea are also keen on him.
Casado to Arsenal
The Blues are set to face off against the Blaugrana in the Champions League after the international break, and the two parties are expected to hold talks over this deal. So, Arsenal will have to put their best efforts to defeat their city rival in this transfer race.
The Spaniard is valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt and still has three years left in his current contract. So, Barcelona are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to let him leave.
Casado mainly plays as a rotational option under Hansi Flick. He started regularly in the last few games before the international break amid Pedri’s injury absence.
Casado likes to be deployed in the double midfield pivot role but is also comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker position. He is a technically gifted player and possesses the potential to flourish in Arteta’s system.
Therefore, the Barcelona star might be a shrewd acquisition for the North London club should they eventually manage to secure his services by defeating Chelsea in this race.
