Pundit says Arsenal’s Gabriel ‘most influential’ in PL
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said that Arsenal star Gabriel Magalhaes is the ‘most influential’ player in the Premier League.
The Gunners have started the new season with the ambition of winning the Premier League after finishing second in the last three consecutive campaigns.
Mikel Arteta’s side have enjoyed a bright start, sitting at the top of the league with 22 points from nine games. Reigning English champions Liverpool were thought to be their main rival for the title this season, but they have been struggling at the moment and are in mid-table.
On the other hand, Manchester City were said to be the third favourites to win the league this term, but they have been inconsistent thus far, sitting fifth in the league with six points less than Arsenal.
As a result, Arsenal are currently the favourite to become English champions this season, and AFC Bournemouth are second in the league with 18 points.
Now, on Sky Sports, Carragher has hailed Gabriel for his contribution in Arsenal’s recent impressive performances and says that the Brazilian is a ‘colossal’ defender.
Moreover, the former defender states that Gabriel is a ‘leader’ and the best set-piece threat. Because of him, the North London club have become the best team from set-piece situations in the world.
Pundit lauds Gabriel
Gabriel is currently the ‘most influential’ player in the Premier League and is the No.1 contender to win the POTY award should the North London club eventually manage to win the title this season.
Carragher said:
“Gabriel is the leader. He’s a colossus at the back and the best set-piece threat. This happens every game. He’s the best defender in a team that produces the best defensive numbers.
“I think Gabriel is the most influential player in the Premier League right now. If Arsenal are to win the Premier League, he will be on course to win the PFA Player of the Year. He’s the No 1 contender.”
In 13 appearances across all competitions, Gabriel, valued at around £65m by Transfermarkt, has made four goal contributions so far this season. Moreover, he has helped his side keep nine clean sheets.
The 27-year-old is currently at the prime stage of his career and has been displaying impressive performances since being deployed alongside William Saliba.
Meanwhile, following a narrow 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League, Arsenal will face off against Brighton and Hove Albion in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
