Arteta gives update on Magalhães ahead of Palace clash
Mikel Arteta is facing a major concern over the fitness of Gabriel Magalhães ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace.
The Brazilian defender, who has been a key figure in Arsenal’s solid backline this season, is now a serious doubt for Sunday’s fixture.
Magalhães found the back of the net in Arsenal’s midweek win over Atlético Madrid, but the joy was short-lived as he picked up an issue that forced him off.
His absence would be a huge blow to Arteta’s plans, especially as the Gunners look to continue their impressive form at the top of the table.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Arteta gave an update on the defender’s condition, saying, “Not much, obviously big Gabi had to leave the pitch with an issue, and he hasn’t been able to train yet, so let’s see how he evolves in the next 24 hours, whether he’s available or not for the weekend.”
The Arsenal manager’s comments suggest that the club will assess Magalhães closer to the match, with his availability depending on how he responds to treatment.
Arteta has relied heavily on the Brazilian’s leadership and strength in defence, and losing him, even temporarily, could prove costly.
If Magalhães fails to recover in time, summer signing Cristhian Mosquera could step in to replace him.
Another recent addition, Piero Hincapié, is also available as an option for Arteta, providing further depth and flexibility in the backline.
Arsenal aim to extend lead at the top
Arsenal go into the weekend sitting top of the Premier League, three points clear of Manchester City in second place.
Their run so far has been built on a combination of defensive discipline and attacking balance.
Arteta’s side have been particularly strong at the back this season, conceding only three goals in all competitions.
That defensive record has been one of the best in Europe, and Gabriel Magalhães has played a major part in achieving it.
The Gunners will now hope to maintain that form when they face Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace.
It will be another important test as they aim to stretch their advantage at the summit and keep momentum in their title push.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Magalhães, Arsenal remain confident of securing another strong performance.
The focus will be on continuing their fine start to the season and maintaining the energy and consistency that have kept them ahead of their rivals.
At the same time, Arteta will be hoping his defensive talisman recovers in time to feature, as Arsenal look to extend their unbeaten run against their London rivals.
