Arsenal battle Premier League rivals for Alfie Smith
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Birmingham City teenager Alfie Smith, following his eye-catching display at youth level last weekend.
The report comes from The Daily Mail and highlights growing interest in the promising goalkeeper.
Rising star makes history at Birmingham
Smith created headlines when he lined up for Birmingham’s under-18s against Fulham despite being only 14 years old.
His appearance in the 4-3 victory made him the second youngest goalkeeper ever to feature in the under-18 Premier League.
The youngster showed why coaches have placed such trust in him.
Within the opening seconds, he launched a superb long pass from deep, releasing Aurelien Guernier down the wing.
Guernier’s delivery was then finished off by Louie Rea to give Birmingham the lead. Later in the game, Smith proved his quality once more.
With the score finely balanced, he made a crucial stop in the 87th minute to secure Birmingham’s first win of the campaign.
Already standing at 6ft 1ins, he has impressed coaches with his ability to handle the ball confidently on either foot.
Premier League heavyweights circle
Smith’s rise has sparked interest from several top clubs. Arsenal, well known for spotting young talent and helping them develop into stars, are among the sides following his progress closely.
The London club have a strong record of nurturing youth players, either for their own first team or for future moves elsewhere.
Birmingham are determined to hold on to their teenage prospect and are looking to secure him to a new contract. However, competition for his signature is fierce.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are all monitoring him, making the battle for his services highly competitive.
Smith has already picked up recognition at academy level. He was named Birmingham’s under-15 player of the season and has represented England at the same age group.
Earlier this year, he also became Birmingham’s youngest under-18 debutant since Jude Bellingham, underlining his growing reputation.
The teenager’s rapid development has put him firmly on the radar of top-flight clubs.
With such a strong start to his young career, Smith is quickly becoming one of the most exciting goalkeeping talents in English football.
