Arsenal could seal surprise deal to sign Josh Brownhill
Arsenal could reportedly seal a surprise deal to sign Josh Brownhill even after the transfer window has closed, as per Football London.
Following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho as free agents, the Gunners have decided to revamp their midfield department by signing Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.
However, the Dane has struggled with fitness problems and wasn’t named in the matchday squad in any of the first three Premier League fixtures this season.
Now, Football London report that if Norgaard remains sidelined for a long period and either Declan Rice or Zubimendi joins the former Brentford star on the treatment table, Arsenal could look for a free agent to add depth to the engine room.
Brownhill is available on the market for free after turning down a lucrative contract proposal to stay at Burnley, and the North London club could make a surprise swoop to secure his service.
However, purchasing the 29-year-old won’t be straightforward for Arsenal, as Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in him, and they have made approaches to sign him.
Brownhill to Arsenal
Brownhill, valued at around £12m by Transfermarkt, played a key role in Burnley’s promotion last term, scoring 18 goals and registering six assists in 42 appearances in the Championship.
He has several years of Premier League experience with Burnley and would add depth to Arsenal’s midfield should they eventually opt to sign him. Considering he is a free agent, he can be signed even though the transfer window has closed.
However, he doesn’t have much experience playing at the highest level and might not be able to help Arsenal achieve their lofty ambitions. Therefore, it would be a big surprise if Arsenal eventually make a concrete approach to sign him.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have reinforced several areas of the squad by splashing more than £270m this summer. Apart from Zubimendi and Norgaard’s acquisitions, Kepa Arrizabalaga has joined to support David Raya.
Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié have been signed to add depth in the centre-back position. Noni Madueke has been signed from Chelsea to create competition for Bukayo Saka, while Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze are the two other forwards Arteta has purchased to strengthen the squad.
