Arsenal ‘closing’ in on a deal to sign Leverkusen’s Hincapié
Arsenal are reportedly ‘closing’ in on a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners have established themselves as one of the best teams defensively in the Premier League in recent years. They have even started the season without conceding a goal after two matches.
Mikel Arteta’s side already decided to reinforce the centre-back position further by signing Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia earlier this summer.
However, they are willing to buy another defender before the September 1st transfer deadline, as Jakub Kiwior is on the verge of joining FC Porto. Moreover, Oleksandr Zinchenko is also expected to move away.
Now, on X, Romano states that Arsenal want Hincapié to reinforce the backline and are willing to sign him on a loan deal with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer.
Leverkusen have decided to agree to this proposal; therefore, the North London club are ‘closing’ in on securing his service. The Ecuadorian international has a £52m release clause in his current contract and has a contract until 2029 at BayArena.
Romano wrote:
“Understand Arsenal are closing in on Piero Hincapié deal with Bayer, here we go soon! Agreement almost done as Bayer accept loan with obligation to buy for Hincapié as formula wanted by AFC. Details on fee structure being sorted and then here we go coming next.”
Hincapié to Arsenal
The 23-year-old is a 6-foot-tall left-footed centre-back but is also comfortable in the left-back position. Moreover, Xabi Alonso previously used him in the LWB role at times.
Kieran Tierney left as a free agent at the end of last season, and following Kiwior and Zinchenko’s potential departure, Arteta would be left with Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, and Myles Lewis-Skelly as options for the left side of the defence.
Therefore, signing a new option to add depth in this area would be the right decision. Arsenal have already signed seven new players by spending around £270m this summer. So, perhaps, they couldn’t afford to sign Hincapié permanently.
Hincapié is a talented player and helped Leverkusen win their first-ever Bundesliga title a couple of years ago. So, he could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal to bolster the defence.
