Arsenal eye move to sign Lyon forward Malick Fofana
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Olympique Lyonnais star Malick Fofana, as per a recent report.
The 20-year-old moved to Groupama Stadium from KAA Gent at the beginning of last year and initially took time to settle in his new surroundings.
Although the youngster played as a rotational option last term, he showcased glimpses of his qualities in Ligue 1, making 16 goal contributions across all competitions.
Following that, he has attracted a lot of attention in this transfer window. Bayern Munich were initially linked with a move for him before signing Luis Diaz to reinforce the frontline.
Everton were also keen on purchasing him, but the Belgian didn’t want to move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium as he is keen on joining a Champions League club if he were to leave Lyon.
Now, as per a recent French report (via The Sun), Arsenal are interested in signing a new forward despite already buying Eberechi Eze, and Fofana is on their radar.
Lyon need to raise around £35m before the deadline to stay on the right side of the FFP rule. So, they could cash-in on him with his existing deal set to run until 2028.
Fofana to Arsenal
The Belgian, valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt, likes to be deployed on the left flank and has enjoyed a stellar start to this season, scoring a goal and registering one assist in two league encounters. He has even helped his side win the first two games of this term.
Arsenal have already purchased Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze this summer to bolster the frontline. However, Gabriel Jesus has been struggling with fitness problems in recent years, while Kai Havertz has sustained a serious knee injury.
On the other hand, Bukayo Saka picked up a hamstring problem against Leeds United last weekend and is likely to remain sidelined over the coming weeks.
Gabriel Martinelli, meanwhile, has been displaying below-average displays in recent times. So, perhaps, Mikel Arteta is keen on purchasing a new forward before the end of this transfer window.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to sign Fofana before the September 1st deadline.
