Arsenal eye Ollie Watkins as Havertz faces injury layoff
Arsenal are considering a shock move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as they look for options to cover for the injured Kai Havertz.
Reports from TeamTalk suggest the Gunners have added Watkins to their shortlist as the summer transfer window edges closer to its end.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been busy in the market, strengthening across different areas.
They have already secured deals for Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Nørgaard, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres.
The Gunners are also close to signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace in a move that will boost their attacking depth.
Arsenal face challenge in Watkins pursuit
Havertz has suffered a knee injury which has forced Arsenal to explore more attacking options.
The German international is set for a spell on the sidelines, leaving a gap in the squad that Arteta wants to fill before the new season gets into full swing.
Watkins has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time
The England international remains a key figure for Unai Emery’s side and any deal will be difficult to complete.
The report adds that Aston Villa are reluctant to let their main striker leave. Watkins is valued at around £60 million by the Midlands club.
Villa see him as a vital part of their plans after a strong campaign last season.
Watkins enjoyed an excellent year in 2024/25, scoring 17 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions.
His performances helped Villa secure European football and underlined his importance to Emery’s system.
Arsenal believe he could offer the attacking threat they need in Havertz’s absence, but persuading Villa to sell will not be straightforward.
Arsenal still have time before the transfer deadline, but whether they make a formal bid remains to be seen.
The club’s summer business has already been one of the most active in the Premier League, yet the need for another forward could see them enter the market again.
