Arsenal make ‘contact’ to sign Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman
Arsenal have reportedly made ‘contact’ over a deal to sign Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
The Gunners started the season with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend. However, their early momentum has been dampened by the unfortunate news that Kai Havertz has suffered a serious knee injury and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period..
With Gabriel Jesus already out, Mikel Arteta has been left with Viktor Gyokeres as the only centre-forward option. So, it has been suggested that the North London club have intensified their efforts to strengthen the frontline.
Even before Havertz’s injury, the Emirates club have been looking to reinforce the left flank, having already purchased Gyokeres and Noni Madueke.
Now, on TBR Football, Bailey says that Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Lookman by his representatives as he is keen on leaving Gewiss Stadium to take a new challenge in his career.
The forward was initially keen on joining Inter Milan, but the Nerazzurri have no intention of purchasing him by matching Atalanta’s £43m price tag. But English clubs won’t have any issue signing him by spending that much.
Therefore, the player is now ready to evaluate other options. Andrea Berta previously made contact over this deal, and the player’s agent has now made ‘contact’ to offer the forward.
Lookman to Arsenal
However, purchasing Lookman won’t be straightforward for the Gunners as his agent has also approached Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Chelsea regarding a potential move. Tottenham even hold a long-term interest in the Nigerian.
Arteta likes having versatile players, and Lookman is comfortable playing in the CAM or second striker role; moreover, he is efficient on the left flank.
Lookman previously spent time in the Premier League with Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, but struggled to showcase his best. However, he has improved a lot as a player and is unlikely to face such challenges again in the English top flight should he return this summer.
The 27-year-old is currently at the prime stage of his career and could be a useful acquisition for Arsenal. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium before the September 1st deadline.
