Arsenal agree deal to sign Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze
Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Crystal Palace for the signing of midfielder Eberechi Eze, according to reports from The Athletic.
Eze seemed set for a move to Tottenham after they had agreed a deal with Palace for his signature. However, in a stunning turnaround, Arsenal have hijacked the proposed deal and Eze has snubbed Spurs in favour of joining his boyhood club, Arsenal.
The deal is valued at around £68 million, the same figure Tottenham Hotspur had been prepared to pay before his release clause expired, as per the report.
Personal terms and medical plans
The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reports that the 27-year-old has now also agreed on personal terms with Arsenal.
He is expected to feature for Palace in their Conference League play-off clash against Fredrikstad on Thursday night.
Following that match, he will undergo his medical in north London on Friday before the transfer is completed.
The negotiations were overseen by Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and vice-chairman Tim Lewis.
Berta, who joined from Atletico Madrid earlier this year, has already made a strong impact in his first summer at the club.
Eze is set to become Arsenal’s seventh signing of this transfer window.
The Gunners have already secured Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, and Viktor Gyokeres.
His arrival further underlines Arsenal’s determination to reshape the squad for the season ahead.
Boost after Havertz injury
The move for Eze comes at a crucial point for Arsenal. Kai Havertz has suffered an injury and is now expected to spend time on the sidelines.
This setback has increased the need for another creative midfielder who can also contribute in advanced areas.
Eze offers that flexibility, as he is capable of playing through midfield or out wide on the wing.
His versatility makes him a valuable addition and provides Mikel Arteta with extra options in attack.
Last season, the England international registered 14 goals and 11 assists across competitions.
He also scored in the FA Cup final, helping Crystal Palace secure the first major trophy in the club’s history.
A boyhood Arsenal supporter, Eze previously spent time in the academy before leaving in his teenage years.
His return to the club he grew up admiring completes a journey back to north London.
Career at Crystal Palace
Eze joined Palace from Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2020 in a £17 million deal.
Since then, he has made 169 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 40 goals in total.
At international level, he has been capped 12 times for England and has found the net once.
His consistent rise has made him one of the Premier League’s most admired attacking midfielders.
