Arsenal told Gyokeres ‘exactly what’ they need to win title
Former midfielder Joe Cole has said that Viktor Gyokeres is ‘exactly what’ Arsenal need to finally win the Premier League title.
Mikel Arteta took over the managerial role at the Gunners in a tough state back in 2019. He has managed to make the north London club a Premier League title challenger over the last few years.
However, Arteta has been struggling to take the next step and guide Arsenal to become the English champions. They have finished second in the last three consecutive campaigns.
Therefore, Arsenal have spent big money this summer to hand Arteta the necessary tools to win the league next season. Arsenal already had Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus as the centre-forward options, but it was widely suggested that they needed to upgrade this area to win big silverware.
Arsenal have decided to do that by signing Gyokeres from Sporting CP in a £64m deal. Arteta’s side initially attempted to buy Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, and they had been linked with a move for him since last summer, but eventually decided to buy the Swede.
Now, on TNT Sports, Cole says that Gyokeres is ‘exactly what’ Arsenal need to finally overcome their two decades of Premier League title drought. The north Londoners would be relieved that Arsenal are going to start the season with a specialist striker.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
He said:
“Good signing, exactly what Arsenal need – a centre-forward. Fans will be relieved that they’re going into the season with a recognised centre-forward. [A] little, little worry about the fact he’s not played in Europe’s top five leagues, and he’s 27, but he scores goals.”
Gyokeres enjoyed a stellar couple of seasons at Sporting, scoring 97 goals and registering 28 assists in 102 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he was the most prolific striker in Europe during this period.
Therefore, Arsenal fans will be hoping that he will be able to replicate the same goal tally at the Emirates Stadium. If he manages to do that, their chances of achieving big silverware will multiply.
Gyokeres even scored his first goal for Arsenal in the last pre-season game against Athletic Club last weekend. Now, he will make his competitive debut for Arsenal against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, and Ruben Amorim, under whom he flourished in his career at Jose Alvalade Stadium, will be on the opposite dugout.
