Arsenal must sell before making move for Rodrygo Goes
Arsenal would need to offload at least one player if they are to sign Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes this summer, according to The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana.
The Brazilian winger has been linked with a possible move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, and several European clubs have reportedly shown interest.
Arsenal are among the sides keeping an eye on the situation, as they aim to add more quality to their attack ahead of the new season.
Although they have been active in the current window, Mikel Arteta’s team are still open to improving the left-hand side of their forward line.
The report claims that Arsenal held initial talks with Rodrygo’s representatives, but didn’t prioritise a move due to their need to strengthen other areas.
Adding players at centre-forward and central midfield was a key focus for the club. Following the arrivals of Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, Arsenal can now turn their attention to bringing in a left winger.
Martinelli or Trossard may need to make way
However, if Arsenal are to proceed with a move for Rodrygo, it is believed one of Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard would have to leave.
Both players have been rotated on the left in recent seasons, but bringing in a player of Rodrygo’s level could force a change in that department.
Rodrygo had a productive 2024/25 campaign with Real Madrid, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions.
The Spanish giants are open to listening to offers, although they are not actively pushing him out of the squad.
The Gunners have been handed a boost, as other major clubs monitoring the Brazilian are reportedly not pressing ahead with formal bids. Rodrygo has also reportedly rejected the advances of Tottenham.
That development may leave Arsenal with a clearer path, but only if they can raise funds and create space within their current squad.
Selling a player like Trossard, who has attracted interest from abroad, could be key to unlocking any deal for Rodrygo.
Arteta’s side are expected to make more moves before the transfer window shuts, but financial balancing will be crucial in any big-name arrivals.
