Arsenal miss out on Will Wright as Liverpool win race
Arsenal have suffered a major setback in their attempt to sign highly-rated Salford City forward Will Wright, with the youngster now set to join Liverpool, according to The Athletic.
The 17-year-old had been on Arsenal’s radar as part of their ongoing efforts to add top talent to their youth ranks.
Reports claim Arsenal had agreed a package with Salford worth around £200,000 plus additional bonuses, but could not finalise terms with the player.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have reached an agreement with both the player and Salford, allowing them to move ahead in the race.
Wright is said to have preferred remaining in the North West, which played a key part in his decision to choose Liverpool over a move to London.
Gunners lose out despite strong academy record
Arsenal have long been known for developing top young talents, with their academy producing players like Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman in recent years.
That record has also brought financial rewards, with the club regularly promoting players into the first team or selling them for profit.
Wright had caught the eye with his displays in Salford’s B team, where he built a reputation as a reliable goalscorer at youth level.
He made his first-team debut for Salford in January in a match against Manchester City and later featured in two League Two games before the season ended.
Until now, his development has largely taken place outside the traditional academy system, making his performances all the more impressive.
Those close to the player believe a move to a top-level club will help take his game to the next stage.
Arsenal’s failure to tie up the deal despite early progress highlights how competitive the battle for young players has become among Premier League clubs.
Although disappointed, Arsenal are expected to continue exploring other youth targets to strengthen their academy setup.
The Gunners’ scouting network remains active, and more additions are expected before the end of the window.
