Arsenal face blow as Chelsea close in on Hato
Arsenal appear to have missed out on the signing of Jorrel Hato with the Ajax defender edging closer to joining bitter rivals Chelsea.
According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are in advanced talks with Ajax over a deal, with discussions reaching the final stages.
The 19-year-old defender has been a long-term target for Arsenal and is admired by Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners have followed Hato’s progress closely over the past two years. Arteta views him as a player with potential to strengthen the defence, both now and in the future.
There was a feeling that Arsenal would formalise their interest in Hato if a buyer could be found for Oleksandr Zinchenko or Jakub Kiwior.
However, with neither player close to leaving at this time, Chelsea have stolen a march on Arsenal and are now confident of completing a deal.
Hato has reportedly agreed personal terms with Enzo Maresca’s side, putting them in a strong position to finalise the transfer.
The deal is expected to cost around £35 million, with Chelsea now working to wrap up negotiations with Ajax in the coming days.
Mosquera arrival eases defensive concerns
Although Arsenal may miss out on Hato, they already secured the signing of Cristhian Mosquera this summer.
The 20-year-old joined from Valencia and has been highlighted as a key addition to Arteta’s squad.
The Spanish defender has impressed in La Liga and is seen as a player with high potential.
His arrival was prioritised by the club, and he could be handed an important role this season.
While the Gunners would have preferred to land both Hato and Mosquera, missing out on the Ajax star is less damaging with Mosquera already in place.
Arteta will now turn his focus back to preparing the team for the new season. Arsenal are set to play Tottenham Hotspur on 31st July, as part of their final pre-season matches.
After facing Spurs, they will take on Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao to complete their pre-season schedule.
These fixtures are expected to give further clues about the players Arteta will rely on for the upcoming campaign.
Hato’s expected move to Chelsea is a blow, but Arsenal remain active in the market.
With the right opportunities, the Gunners may still add to their squad before the season begins.
