Official: Arsenal complete £64m move for Viktor Gyökeres

By on July 26, 2025

Arsenal have announced the signing of Viktor Gyökeres from Portuguese side Sporting CP. The Swedish striker has joined on a five-year contract.

The deal will see Arsenal pay an initial £55million, with a further £9million in add-ons based on individual and team achievements.

The Gunners have made securing a centre forward a priority this summer. Their lack of cutting edge up front was one of the key reasons they fell short in major competitions last season.

They’ve now signed one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe so Mikel Arteta has finally got a proper No.9.

Gyökeres, who is 27 years old, will wear the club’s number 14 shirt. Reports say he personally requested the shirt during negotiations.

The striker had a brilliant campaign last season in Portugal, scoring 54 goals and providing 13 assists in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon.

The forward will now travel to Asia to link-up with the rest of the Arsenal squad and could make his debut against Tottenham next week.

Gyökeres career pathway

Born in the Swedish capital Stockholm, Gyökeres began his football journey at IF Brommapojkarna.

He worked his way up through their youth teams and scored 32 times in 31 matches at under-19 and under-21 level.

He made his senior debut for the club at the age of 17 before earning a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2018.

During his time in England, he had loan spells at Swansea City, St. Pauli in Germany, and Coventry City.

He later joined Coventry permanently and helped them reach the Championship play-off final in 2023.

The striker spoke to the club’s official website shortly after his arrival to explain why he choose Arsenal. He said:

“I just felt that it was the right club for me,” he revealed.

“What I heard from Mikel and Andrea when I was speaking with them, and just what I’ve seen in the past years, how they’ve been playing football. When I was playing against Arsenal last season, I could really feel it was a very strong team and very difficult to play against.

“That made me choose Arsenal, and of course all the history the club has and the massive fanbase. It’s been amazing to see all the support that they have already given me before I even arrived. That’s what it’s all about. It’s going to be very nice to see them in the stadiums as well.”

Arsenal will hope Gyökeres brings added sharpness to their attack as they look to challenge for major trophies in the new campaign.
